I’ve always been a bit creeped out by “bucket lists” and “Things to See/Hear/Read before You Die” books. I don’t need to be reminded of my own mortality on a regular basis. I also don’t respond well to pressure…particularly with such a grim deadline. That being said, I do have a list for you…but these are just a few things you should do in December before you happily and healthily greet the New Year.
Let’s start in historic downtown Wilmington where the Battleship North Carolina will be dressed in brilliant lights through January 4th. From bow to stern…and up and down the masts…the lights will make the ship a beautiful sight from downtown.
Prior to Christmas, you should take-in a performance of the classic ballet “The Nutcracker.” The Carolina Ballet is offering many opportunities for you to see their unique and magical production in Raleigh (Memorial Auditorium) or Durham (Durham Performing Arts Center).
Another highlight in December happens in McAdenville, along the banks of the South Fork River in Gaston County. A half-million red, white, and green bulbs on over 400 trees transforms this textile town into “Christmas Town USA,” a tradition that dates back to 1956.
Looking for a December activity that doesn’t involve holiday lights? The fascinating “Titanic: The Artifact Exhibit” continues through January 8th at the Natural Science Center of Greensboro. This exhibit will engage you in a compelling manner that you will not soon forget.
In Asheville, not only can you enjoy Christmas at the Biltmore…but also the 19th annual National Gingerbread House Competition™ at the Grove Park Inn Resort and Spa. Gingerbread is required eating in December. Why not enjoy an entire national celebration about it?
Those are my five suggestions. What December events do you recommend?

The New Years Pickle Drop in Moutn Olive, NC!!! (I've actually never been but couldn't resist posting!) On a more serious note, Candle Tea in Old Salem or at any of our state's Moravian churches is always a treat. Carols, coffee, and those delicious sweet buns are a favorite with my whole family. Learn more about Candle Tea and other Christmas holiday events at either http://candletea.org/ or http://www.oldsalem.org/holiday.html.

Tom, I would add taking in the Christmas lights at Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden in Belmont. You don't drive to see these lights. You walk or take a carriage ride through the garden which is dressed up with wonderful displays. Carol

Thanks for your additions to my list. And let's not forget...as sure as a 1200 pound glittering sphere will descend on the Big Apple and a 1250 pound copper and steel “acorn” will drop in Raleigh [http://www.firstnightraleigh.com/], 2012 will arrive and compel us to come up with some New Year’s Resolutions. I take my New Year inspiration from James Brown…as nothing beats “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag” for cleansing one’s palate on an annual basis.

I can't wait to take my 3 yr old grandaughter ice skating downtown Raleigh at Winterfest and then on a sleigh ride afterwards with hot chocolate.
