Once the weather starts getting a little more “nippy” and the sun starts going down sooner, we begin to live inside our homes more!
Over the past few years, I have enjoyed incorporating some festive touches for the fall season into my home. Wondering what I could possibly do to “recycle” past decorations, my thoughts landed on the Christmas tree I only bring it once a year. A little creativity and out-of-the-box thinking landed me with an idea I’m quite proud of!
I pulled out the tree, strung it with lights and decorated it for the fall with some of the following:
- Orange lights
- Fall Leaves
- Straw/ “craft sized” bales of straw for the base mixed with burlap (instead of tree skirt)
- Scarecrows
- Feathers
- Birds
- Pumpkins/Gourds
- Fall Ribbons
- Artificial Vegetables/Fruits (apples)
- Stuff in some Empty wine bottles (really a neat touch, not really “fallish” but red wine bottles reflect the lights and look really fallish)
- Get creative — Use things you already have and customize to suit your home and families like/dislikes!
Most of these items can be found at dollar stores/craft stores for just a few dollars! You will be amazed at the type of “Fall Season” tree you can create.
While you are in the festive, decorating mood here are some other inexpensive ideas you can add around your home:
- Add fall leaves to existing floral arrangements within your home, I use the “fall-bush type” artificial leaves.
- Artificial leaves on surfaces around accessories,
- Bundled dried corn stalks around exterior lighting poles/ beside doorways
But I have, of course, saved the best for last. This decoration gets me more compliments than any other!
A friendly scarecrow. That’s right, a friendly scarecrow. I usually remove the bamboo stake from the back and sit him (it’s always a him in my mind) on the bench in front of my home or at my picnic table. It’s really funny to watch passersby wave at him! Let your inner child come out and be whimsical! Last year I sat him at one of my dining room table as well.
You’ll be amazed at what “conversation pieces” these will become and how much festivity just a few $$ can add to your home. What are some of your best Fall decorations?
