Have you ever considered recycling your home?
You buy a house and lot with the plan to tear down the existing house and build a new one to your particular liking. Nothing new here. Neighborhoods have been being “redeveloped” in this way for years.
But now there’s a twist.
You can donate the existing house to Builders of Hope and they will recycle it.
No, I don’t mean they will take it apart and give the different materials to be reused (which is another form of recycling). They actually relocate the entire house.
Founding in 2007 by Nancy Murray, Builders of Hope has been working to rebuild homes and lives through safe, affordable housing to working families. Much like the Habitat for Humanity philosophy of sweat equity, the recipients of this housing are part of the process from start to finish while their home is being moved and improved on the new home site. Step 1 is to get the house relocated. Step 2 is to make improvements to improve the houses livability and efficiency all the while creating a new community.
Builders of Hope currently has 4 communities they are building here in North Carolina, Raleigh, Charlotte, Fuquay-Varina, and Durham. And they were recently featured on the CBS Evening News as part of a special series.
Just another example of the innovative ways that a person takes a problem and solves it in a new and creative way. Thanks for the great work Nancy!
