Your New Home- Are You Protected?

The process of buying a new home is an exciting and daunting one. It can be easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of it all, especially when purchasing your new insurance coverage.   You may want to stop and think about a few things before diving in.

Your furniture, while in transit to your new home, will NOT be covered by your new home coverage.   Be sure to discuss this with your current agent.  Your moving company may provide some coverage but it will not be as broad as what can be provided under your homeowners insurance.    Can you imagine if something happens to your mother’s china and you had no coverage for breakage?   What if your antique desk was destroyed?

Once you get to your new home, you may have purchased additional valuables that may need special coverage such as fine arts, painting, collectibles, and jewelry.  Ask your trusted advisor (aka your insurance agent) about that as well.

What if your new home has a swimming pool- do you have enough coverage?  Consider making sure you have enough coverage for the pool structure, as well as increasing your personal liability coverage since you now have additional exposure in the water.  This may also be a good time to make sure you have an umbrella policy in place to further protect you regarding activities in the pool.

Does your new home have a detached garage?   This would fall under the “other structures” coverage on your home policy.  Review with your agent and make sure you have enough coverage to replace it if it is damaged or destroyed.

If you are moving from another state, be sure to get insurance in your new state.   Most states require that you obtain insurance first, register the car and obtain your new drivers license.

There’s no better time to have your insurance check up than when you are moving to a new home!

  1. One of my clients found out how important furniture coverage is while her possessions were in transit from NJ to Charlotte. There was a fire in the moving truck while the truck was parked overnight in Baltimore. She lost nearly everything. What a nightmare!
