The fourth of July may have been a few weeks ago yet we still tend to think of the entire month as one during which we celebrate and remember our troops and veterans. Being the lyrical lover that I am, I can think of no better way to honor someone than through a piece of music.
Recently, I had the immense pleasure of attending a concert at the Verizon Wireless Ampitheatre in the University Area of Charlotte, NC. The concert featured Southern stars including James Otto, Trace Atkins and Toby Keith. For those who have experienced a concert at Verizon Ampitheatre you already know about the magical atmosphere that this outdoor venue offers its patrons.
For those who may be new to the scene, rest assured that it doesn’t matter where you sit. Be it in the seats or on the lawn, spending an evening under the stars listening to music is a guaranteed good time. That said, if you are on the lawn, get there a little early to secure a spot because it will fill up really quickly! Each year without fail the Ampitheatre becomes home to some of the biggest names in the music industry. Last night for example was Dave Matthews Band.
But back to my most recent experience! While it wasn’t July 4th, Trace Atkins still found a way to honor a veteran in the audience.
Before his final song, Tracie Atkins walked down into the audience and shook hands with a wounded soldier in a wheelchair and gave him his cowboy hat. He then returned to stage, thanked the soldier for his service and sang his final song.
Toby Keith was the final performer and always ends his concerts (OK – so I have seen him a few times before!) with American Soldier and Red, White and Blue. Before concluding he thanked all the vets and American soldiers who are serving in the armed forces. The final song of the evening was Toby and Trace singing a tribute to our soldiers while red, white and blue confetti filled the arena. A sight that was made even more amazing given the venue we were sitting in.
While I attended the concerts for the music and entertainment, I left with much more. A reminder of the sacrifice others have made and are making for us and it makes me very thankful that I live in the USA. A wonderful reminder while we are still in the month of July.
