Insider Secrets: Cleaning & Preparing Your Home for Sale

When I bought my last car, the dealership provided a “Detail Kit” to help me keep the car in pristine condition. I immediately thought that this would be a great concept for my listing clients. If I could give each of you a “Detail Kit” to stage your home easily and keep it in spotless condition, it would include:

  • A Zenith Tibet Almond Stick to remove scratches on hardwoods: Whenever I move furniture, no matter how careful I am, I tend to have a couple of hardwood floor scratches. I have great luck “wiping out” these scratches with the Zenith Tibet Almond Stick.
  • Carpet remnants to move furniture on hardwoods: Moving furniture in any setting is a daunting task. However, after watching my step-mom and Dad rearrange my house several times, I have to tell you that it is easier than you think. Use one or two carpet remnants. Place the carpet remnant upside down (carpet facing the hardwood floor) and put it underneath the legs of the furniture piece that you want to move. You can easily slide the furniture piece around the house on these remnants. It makes staging a breeze!
  • LOTS of Mr. Clean Magic Erasers: These work “magically” to clean trim, tile, porcelain, white cabinets, doors (especially around knobs) and vinyl wallpaper. You can use the magic erasers on walls but be careful because they can remove the paint.
  • Cape Cod Metal Polishing Cloths: If you have silver but are afraid to “show it off” because of the tarnish, use Cape Cod Metal Polishing cloths for a SUPER easy silver cleaning. Your freshly polished silver tray, cups or cache pot will provide style to any room.
  • Plink Garbage Disposal Cleaner and Deodorizer: Any smell in a house can be an instant deal breaker for a Buyer. Therefore, it is important to attack any potential smells before a Buyer comes through your front door. If you have an issue with a stale smelling garbage disposal, Plink is a great “fix” to have handy. You can also place lime or lemon rinds down the disposal to help neutralize the smell.
  • Touch-Up Paint and small brush: If you have the old buckets of paint for your home (hopefully, you have labeled each bucket by room), take a small paintbrush and touch up the scuff marks on your walls. It takes minutes but makes a world of difference. Note of caution:  test a small section first to make sure that the paint matches. I used this technique last weekend and had to retrace my footsteps because the “cream” that I thought was the den color was actually the “buff” color of the master bathroom. Though it took seconds to correct, I could have easily saved time by testing it first.

I would love to hear what you would include in your “Detail Kit” bucket. If you have any ideas, please let me know!
